  How could a decent economy bring stability to local residents in Thailand’s far South when the ongoing southern insurgency continues? The violence that erupted in early 2004 and has continued since has left thousands of people dead in its wake and has severely affected daily life of many of the locals who see their incomes sharply depleted.

  Muslim apparel and costume accessories made by villagers in the southern border provinces are one of the incentives that government-related agencies have been trying to push forward to compete in international markets so as to improve the quality of life of local residents.

  Members of local dressmaking groups have been trained to improve their skills in designing, tailoring, lacing and embroidering Muslim clothing, thanks to the Industrial Promotion Department’s Industrial Development Project for Muslim Costume Products in Thailand’s Five Southernmost Provinces.   The renowned delicate Phrae-Wa silk of Kalasin has been chosen as souvenirs for spouses of ASEAN leaders.

  The Governor of Kalasin, Mr. Viroj Jivarungsan revealed that the shawls made from Phrae-Wa silk were chosen as souvenirs for spouses of ASEAN leaders at the 15th ASEAN Summit. The selection could promote the products made from Phrae-wa Silk to the international market in the future. (More …)

  TOKYO GAME SHOW

  Japan will showcase the full lineup of its creative powers ranging from games, animation and ”manga” comic books to films, music and fashion through a series of events starting this week to highlight their attractiveness and seek more international business opportunities.

  The events, to be held under the banner of the Japan International Contents Festival, or CoFesta, until late October, will begin with the Sept. 24-27 Tokyo Game Show 2009, the world’s largest computer entertainment show, at the Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba on the outskirts of Tokyo.   Hand-made ancient gold

  Not only is gold precious but it is striking when created in delicate designs. In Thailand’s northern province of Sukhothai, an ancient gold is reproduced, thanks to the influence of local history and antique objects and remains.

  The origin of the ancient gold dated back not that long ago in this Rattanakosin period, where a local woman tried to produce a gold bracelet for her client by imitating a knitted bronze one. (More …)

  It sounds like the soundtrack to the old Batman TV series, but it’s the year’s best leather and fashion show, starting on Thursday

  The strength of Thailand’s fashion and leather industry will be on view Thursday through Sunday at the good old Bif and Bil – the Bangkok International Fashion Fair and Bangkok International Leather Fair.

  And running in conjunction with the event in the Challenger halls of Impact Arena in Muang Thong Thani will be a “Fashion Full Stop” show by Asean Fashion Plus, with contributions from all 10 Southeast Asian countries. (More …)

  Singha’s stout entry gives Bangkok Fashion Week some extra fizz

  The brewers of Singha beer made a bold statement at Bangkok International Fashion Week by tacking their lion motif onto outfits – and in the process injecting some genuine “Thainess”, something not always evident in local clothes shows.

  Marketing manager Piti Bhirombhakdi says the strategy is to lure beer lovers into fashion.

  “Even if you don’t drink beer, you might buy our clothes because they have a strong connection to what Singha beer stands for,” he says. (More …)
