  UNAIDs: Changing the HIV/AIDs situation in Thailand

  No Government in this world can protect people from HIV/AIDs, the change must come from the people said Dr Michael Hahn, UNAIDs Country Coordinator for Thailand.

  This means that the Government can only help by providing the environment to facilitate change, especially to the risk groups such as same-sex groups or drug addicts who share infected needles.

  As an international agency for HIV/AIDs, the UNAIDs provide a support system, linking the Government, the civil society and other relevant parties together. It doesn’t reach out to the patients directly but it helps Thailand get the support they need such as technical support, better development policy or training in certain areas such as spreading awareness or prevention methods.   HIV Support Programs in Thailand under the Royal Patronage

  Thailand has been praised for the success in reducing the number of new diagnosed HIV patients since the first cases of AIDS were identified in 1981. The hard work of related sections as well as the essential support from the royal family showed the huge amount of HIV infected reduction within the country.

  HRH Princess Soamsawali, the niece of HRH Queen Sirikit was the one who showed strong commitment in the area of HIV/AIDS. Numbers of the Red Cross Society Programs on HIV infection were under her patronage, with the main project being launched to reduce AIDS infection from mother to baby.

  The project “Reducing AIDS Infection from Mother to New-Born Baby” has been operated with cooperation from the HIV Netherlands and Australia as Thailand Research Collaboration (HIV NAT) to establish an internationally accepted HIV clinic and laboratory guideline as well as to conduct other critical studies on HIV.   Thailand and US keep cooperating in the fight against HIV

  The US government confirmed that cooperative response to HIV/AIDS with Thailand would be sustained to combat the spread of AIDS and to encourage further medical research.

  US Ambassador Eric G. John in Thailand voiced confidence that the two governments would keep on working for better lives of those HIV/AIDS infected patients.

  Thailand and the US have coordinated in public health for over 40 years through many state agencies such as the US Agency for International Development (USAID), US Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences (AFRIMS) and US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). (More …)

  Bangkok launches campaign to counter AIDS 

  The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and anti-AIDS networks has kicked off a campaign to promote the use of condoms and educate the public about AIDS.

  Deputy Governor of Bangkok MD Malinee Sukhawetworakit yesterday presided over the anti-AIDS campaign at Chatuchak Park after statistics suggested a number of new HIV positive patients in the capital city increased. MD Malinee said there were accumulated 350,000 patients over the past 25 years or 0.4% of the Thai population.

  Currently, 26,000 patients of those infected are still alive. In Bangkok alone, there are 57,000 patients, with 2,400 new cases this year.

  Most HIV positive patients were unaware of their disease and transmitted it to other people, the deputy governor said.

  The campaign stresses on providing knowledge about the disease and creating an understanding, especially among teenagers of age below 24 and other risk groups. (NNT) –

  Thai phamacist officially receives Ramon Magsaysay Award 

  

  Dr Krisana Kraisintu

  57-year-old Thai pharmacist Dr Krisana Kraisintu yesterday received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in Manila from her development of the generic version of an anti-HIV drug.

  Dr Krisana has dedicated herself to research on affordable anti-viral drugs for AIDS patients. She played an active role in combating the past serious HIV outbreak in Thailand and started developing the generic version of the anti-HIV AZT which was very expensive back then. (More …)
