  23rd Phuket King´s Cup Regatta on its 2nd day 

  

  Phuket King’s Regatta

  Asia’s biggest and most popular regatta, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, is in its 2nd day of racing today with a fleet of 111 boats across 11 divisions.

  All fleets will converge at the Ko Kaeo Noi first gate before leaving for Ko Hi and Ko Aso islands. They will head back through two gates and then finish at Nai Harn Beach.

  The race is held for 5 days, with the last day coinciding with HM the King’s 82nd birthday anniversary on 5 December.

  Athletes representing 33 nations will attend this year’s competition and it will attract 2,000 visitors. (More …)

  Following the plan by public and private agencies to enlarge Phuket International Airport, Thailand’s second largest airport after Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi, for passenger comfort and improved facilities, the airline business is showing every sign of going well, especially when a number of air carriers are moving forward with their proactive marketing strategies for the upcoming tourism season of the Andaman coastline.

  Thai AirAsia, the Thai subsidiary of Malaysia-based low-cost carrier AirAsia, has designated Phuket as its second hub linking the new routes flying from and to the province, while it has launched additional charter flights servicing Phuket-Hong Kong, Phuket-Singapore, and Phuket-Indonesia’s Medan routes.   New fertile coral reef found off Andaman Coast

  A new fertile coral reef has been discovered off Pha Island, 10 kms from Kho Khao Island, Takua Pa District, Phang Nga Province.

  Mr Paitoon Panchaiyabhum, Director of the Center of Marine and Coastal Resources Conservation 5 (Phuket), Department of Marine and Coastal Resource (DMCR) said the center had assigned staff to thoroughly inspect the reef which was discovered by Phang Nga divers. The reef, which was 1-2 sq km in size, was found virtually untouched at a depth of 10-25 meters with a variety of reef species growing, especially the Anemone coral. (More …)

  50 Miss Teen Thailand contestants also arrived in Phuket to stay at Kata Beach Resort 

  A contingent of 50 contestants aged from 15-18 for the Miss Teen Thailand 2009 contest arrived at the hotel on Wednesday afternoon for a 5 day stay as part of their preparation and video shoots for the finals to be held later in Bangkok. They posed with the elephant statues in front of the hotel while many tourists and passer-bys looked on, stopping the traffic for a short while. Some posed with hotel guests for photos. (More …)

  Phuket Tourist Association to hold ‘Andaman Travel Festival’

  The Phuket Tourist Association will organize the ‘Andaman Travel Festival’ in late November to stimulate tourism in three provinces in the Andaman Sea region, including Phuket, Phan-nga and Krabi.

  Phuket Tourist Association President Somboon Chirayus said the event would be in cooperation of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Thai Airways International Plc (THAI) and the Phuket Provincial Authority Organization (PAO) as well as tourism associations.   Floating eco-resort at tsunami-hit village 

  

  Villagers in the southern province of Phang-nga welcome tourists wanting to learn their way of life, at a floating eco resort. The business helps locals earn income after their village was struck by the December 26 tsunami almost four years ago.

  Baan Kra-chang, an eco-friendly resort, is an idea initiated by local residents to earn a living after they lost their fishing equipment when the Boxing Day tsunami struck the village four years ago.

  The floating resort, located in a mangrove area in Khura Buri district, promotes eco tourism as well as the traditional way of life of locals. Tourists who stay here have the chance to learn about local fishing and floating basket fish farming. (More …)

  Indonesian bamboo shark successfully bred in Phuket

  Phuket Aquarium has succeeded in breeding Indonesian bamboo sharks (the brown-banded bamboo shark) and released them into the sea off Mai Ton Island in provincial seat of Thailand’s southern Andaman coastal resort island of Phuket.

  This shark was the first of its kind that the centre had raised in captivity to return to the sea.

  Thirty-nine Indonesian bamboo sharks, aged 3 months to 2 years, were released together with 199 clown fish. The release was to commemorate Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s birthday on August 12. (More …)
