  The 3rd Thailand International Balloon Festival (TIBF) 2009 begins today, featuring many highlights to celebrate His Majesty the King’s 82nd Birthday Anniversary.

  Culture Minister Teera Slukpetch, accompanied by Ayutthaya Governor Withaya Phiewphong and the director-general of the Fine Arts Department, inaugurated the 3rd TIBF at Wat Mahaeyong in Ayutthaya. This is the first time that the festival is organized in a world heritage city, offering the chance for Thais and foreigners to appreciate the magnificence of the landmarks. There are more than 20 aeronauts from 6 countries namely Australia, Finland, Japan, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, and Thailand, participating in the event. (More …)

  The Ayutthaya World Heritage and Red Cross Fair 2009 will be held from 11-20 December 2009 at the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park to celebrate its prestigious title as a World Cultural Heritage Site.

  Highlights of the event are agricultural exhibitions, a food fair, a Thai-style country song singing contest, floating market activities, cultural performances and a beauty pageant. Booths selling locally-made OTOP products and well known goods from 16 districts can be enjoyed as well as.

  Ayutthaya was declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991. (More …)

  Ferocious killer elephants have been capturing headlines–and public wonder–in Thailand’s local news, but the reasons for the mounting numbers of elephants with an attitude–just why they have become ferocious, is not clear. However, in Thailand’s central Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province, there is an ancient sanctuary founded long ago dedicated solely to provide shelter to calm the spirits of disturbed elephants and to provide them a grounding place to live quietly.

  Not only is this elephant shelter, the so-called ‘Ko Phraya Petch’, for brutal elephants, but next to it is Ayutthaya province’s Royal Elephant Kraal, where others including the most recent killer elephant called ‘Natalie’ are looked after. (More …)

  The World Heritage Committee expressed concerns for Ayutthaya, a Thai registered world heritage site, which could be removed from the UNESCO list.

  The Deputy Permanent Secretary for Culture and a World Heritage Committee member, Ms Somsuda Leeyawanit said the deterioration and heavy encroachment in the area of Ayutthaya World Heritage site were against the criteria of UNESCO and might cause Ayutthaya to be removed from the World Heritage list.   Ayutthaya province today kicks off its Ancient Capital Loy Krathong Festival to run until 2 November.

  Loy Krathong revelers in Bangkok and its vicinities may travel to Ayutthaya’s Bang Sai Arts and Crafts Center to take part in the “Ancient Capital Loy Krathong Festival” which starts today.   Loy Krathong Festival 

  

  As the moon radiates at its fullest on the twelfth lunar month, countless lanterns are set to glide on the waters of the rivers and khlongs. Made from a section of a banana tree trunk embroidered with elaborately folded banana leaves, flowers, candles and incense sticks, the once dark, still waters come to life as the lanterns glimmer like stars. Fireworks explode in the sky with colors and the Nang Noppamas beauty pageant is held to search for the loveliest lady in the Thai national costume.

  Loy means to float and Krathong means a vessel. Held annually on the full moon night of November, the Loy Krathong tradition of setting afloat the krathongs can be traced back to the 14th century in the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai when his favorite consort Nang Noppamas created a lotus-shaped krathong to pay tribute to the Lord Buddha’s footprints on Nammathanathi River in India.   TAT promoting 7 Loy Krathong events nationwide 

  

  The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will organize seven Loy Krathong events taking place during the holiday throughout the nation, each representing its regions unique celebration of the centuries old tradition.

  The TAT has released a schedule of festivals and events that will take place in seven provinces of Thailand for the Loy Krathong holiday this month. The first on the list is the “Colors of the Water Loy Krathong 2009” event taking place in Bangkok, the happening will run from 31 October to 2 November at the Rama VIII Bridge. In Tak province, the 1,000 floating lanterns Royal Cup Competition will take place from 31 October to 4 November along the Ping River in front of the province’s honorary hall. (More …)

  Teams compete for prizes in the 21st annual swan boat races at the Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Craft Centre, 19 to 20 September.

  Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Centre, Ayutthaya province, is worth visiting any time of the year, but it has a special fascination for visitors in September, when the riverside complex hosts the annual international swan boat races.

  Now in its 21st year, the dates were changed this year to 19 to 20 September moving back a week from its usual mid-month slot. But it still promises to be a tough, contested, series of races with nine international teams, mainly from around Asia, vying for the annual trophy. (More …)

    This year the tourism industry of Thailand has been hurt by all sorts of bad publicity, causing tourists to lose confidence in traveling safely to Thailand. To counteract this false perception of Thailand, the TAT has launched “The Ultimate Thailand Explorers” event to create positive awareness of Thailand and inspiration for worldwide tourists to travel here, particularly through the use of the internet and web blogs, which influence tourists the most.

    The Tourism Authority of Thailand therefore invites all interested parties to attend a press conference for “The Ultimate Thailand Explorers” project launch on Monday, September 14 from 14:00 to 16:00 in Lotus Suite 5-7, Centara Grand at Central World. This event is an exciting integrated online travel competition that will promote various Thailand destinations through various social and travel related websites.

  Sangkhla Buri, Kanchanaburi, Thailand

  Sangkhla Buri District in Thailand’s western province of Karnchanaburi, bordering Myanmar, has its own charm and plenty of picturesque scenery. It is also a land of 3 cultures – Thai, Mon and Karen – and has now become a must-see destination.

  In 1984, the construction of Khao Laem Reservoir inundated the old Sangkhla Buri. The old temple can still be seen when the tide recedes around March and April.

  The rebuilt district is located 340 km northwest of Bangkok. It is also home to a number of ethnic groups. The longest wooden bridge in Thailand at 850 metres, the “Mon Bridge”, takes visitors to the Mon Village. (More …)
