  Thai Island and Sea Natural Museum 

  Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn once said “To love our natural resources is true patriotism” and the Royal Thai Navy is a true patriotic entity of the Kingdom. The navy’s Thai Island and Sea Natural Museum in the eastern province of Chon Buri is concrete proof of the navy’s environmental conservation effort.

  The museum was initiated by Her Royal Highness who has concern for marine natural resources. The museum, located on the mountaintop of Ma Jor in Sathaheep district, was completed in 2007.

  Proudly serving as Thailand’s first natural history museum, it is a one-stop display of biological diversities, plants, and marine animals. Spreading over 16 Rai or 100 hectares, it overlooks Samae Sarn and other eight surrounding islands. The museum hopes to create harmony between humans and nature and to help instill environmental awareness in people from all walks of life. (More …)

  Little do people know that there are more than just stereotypical battle ships and submarines involved in the Royal Thai Navy’s daily task. The Navy’s environmental conservation program is among those many proud-to-present missions, considering the changes it has been contributing to the area. The program was just a small project when it was initiated some 20 years ago. Today volunteers from all over the country are drawn to join the activity.

  First Naval Area Commander, Vice Admiral Khanat Thongpool, said the division is responsible for patrolling the upper Gulf of Thailand to monitor basically every single inch of the sea from the wellbeing of the reefs to illegal toxic waste dump. In the latter case, the Navy has a full authority to make an arrest. This specific task makes the Thai Navy uniquely different from counterparts in other countries. (More …)

  Animals at Khao Khiao Open Zoo are protected against cold weather 

  The Khao Khiao Open Zoo in Chon Buri has come up with measures to keep the animals warm in the upcoming cool spell.

  Khao Khiao Open Zoo’s Director Mr Apidet Singhaseni said the zoo had prepared the spotlights as well as hay and dry leaves to cover the ground to prevent the animals from sicknesses from cold weather. Some animal species had the ability to maintain their body temperature, still the zoo would not overlook their healths. (More …)

  ASEAN Summit

  The 15th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and related summits are scheduled to be officially held during 23-25 October 2009 in Thailand (See Thailand Hotels)’s Cha-am (See Cha-am Hotels) and Hua Hin (See Hua Hin Hotels) districts of Phetchaburi (See Phetchaburi Hotels) and Prachuap Khiri Khan (See Prachuap Khiri Khan Hotels) provinces. It is considered a good opportunity for Thailand to host the international summit in two consecutive times despite the fact that the previous meeting was disrupted by the anti-government United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) protesters in April last year, which caused the Thai government to cancel the 14th ASEAN Summit with dialogue partners in Pattaya (See Pattaya Hotels) , Chon Buri (See Chon Buri Hotels).   Navy to the rescue! 

  What more appropriate source of aid for the imperilled turtle than a body of seafarers?

  

  You’re allowed to touch the larger turtles.

  Apart from providing a semi-permanent berth for the world’s smallest and the Kingdom’s only aircraft carrier, the HTMS Chakri Naruebet, and operating a restaurant which serves up some surprisingly tasty seafood dishes (cooked by navy personnel, no less!), the country’s largest naval base in Sattahip, a district of Chon Buri, is also the unlikely home for a sea turtle conservation centre.

  Commercial turtle fishery was outlawed in Thailand back in 1947 and since 1950 the Royal Thai Navy has been responsible for the welfare of sea turtles born along the Chon Buri coast and on islands off Sattahip. Of these, Koh Kram boasts the largest turtle hatchery in the country and is the birthplace of some 30,000 of the little critters each year. (More …)

  TAT and ThaiHealth issue new travel routes for special needs travelers 

  

  The Tourism Authority of Thailand in cooperation with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth) yesterday conducted an activity to introduce travel routes designed for special needs citizens.

  The Bangkok to Chon Buri route featured in a rally yesterday is 1 of 5 routes designed to allow the disabled and elderly to easily travel for leisure. The caravan, exploring the newly designed travel route had its first checkpoint at a PTT Petrol Station. It had a new line of toiletry facilities fully equipped to aid the disabled. (More …)
