  Chulalongkorn Student won ‘The People’s Choice award’ in the designs for the next 90 years contest 

  A Chulalongkorn University student grabbed ‘The People’s Choice award’ through the voting from people around the world in the contest of the designs for the next 90 years under the project Electrolux Design Lab 2009.

  The fifth-year Architecture student, Dulyawat Wongnawa from Chulalongkorn University won ‘The People’s Choice award’ and would go through the 8 finalists in the Electrolux design Lab 2009 in London, England. His idea was a Teleport Fridge to facilitate people in the future. (More …)

  Health Networks oppose International Tobacco Expo 

  

  Health Networks prepare a petition against the upcoming international tobacco expo in November with the view of presenting it to the Prime Minister.

  Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jiraporn Limpananon, from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Chulalongkorn University said Thailand Pharmacy Student Federation and several health networks have jointly declared their intention to oppose the largest international tobacco industry expo which would be organized during 11 – 13 November 2009 through a petition to the Government. They expected to obtain more than 30,000 – 40,000 signatures through all allied pharmacies and drugstores in the networks. (More …)

  Razor clams at Don Hoi Lot under threat

  Razor clams, or Hoi Lot in Thai, have been a source of food and income for local fishermen in the central province of Samut Songkhram for decades. But the razor clam population at the mouth of the Mae Klong river is now under threat. This report takes you to Don Hoi Lot, a habitat of the distinctive shellfish, to find out more.

  The complex ecosystem of Don Hoi Lot, registered as an international wetland under the Ramsar Convention in 2001, was once home to a great variety of species.

  Yet recent a research carried out by Chulalongkorn University in cooperation with the area’s local community reported the density of razor clams had decreased sharply from five per square metre in 2004 to just one this year. (More …)

  Mahler in Thailand – then and now 

  

  Everything happened in that room, from rehearsals of the brand new Chulalongkorn University Chorus to penetrating midnight discussions about the philosophies of post-serial music.

  One evening, I was looking through Ajarn Piya’s extensive LP collection when I discovered, unopened, the Mahler symphonies. You must understand that Ajarn Piya had a huge LP collection because he simply ordered everything that came out. He was more complete than any record shop in Thailand. What am I saying? There weren’t any such shops in Thailand, really.

  Being newly arrived from Cambridge, of course, I was a product of the 1960s Mahler revival. I had been living and breathing the Mahler symphonies for years, and had worn out all my own LPs; I’d just had the incredible experience of singing in Mahler’s “Eighth” in the Albert Hall with an astonishing array of soloists which were a sort of who’s who of British opera, from Heather Harper to Raimond Heryncx, in a concert which was David Willcocks’s farewell to Cambridge.
