  Industrial Estate Authority expects 5% income rise in 2010 

  

  The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) expects investment in the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate to improve and a five per cent increase of income to reach Bt35 billion in the 2010 fiscal year, said IEAT governor Monta Pranootnorap.

  Groups of industries such as electronic parts, electrical appliances, and auto parts from Japan, Taiwan, China and Singapore are expected to invest in Thai industrial estates which are expected to grow about 20 per cent in the next five years, said the IEAT governor. (More …)

  Thailand to lose Bt3-4 billion revenue from AFTA tariff cuts 

  

  Thailand’s Customs Department expects revenue from import and export duties will decline by Bt3-4 billon (US$90-120 million) in the wake of the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA) cuts which became effective on January 1, with the department adjusting its role from tariff collector to facilitator, a senior customs official said on Friday.   Expat Survey and Thailand on International Ranking Track

  Thailand thus far has been included in many surveys and rankings conducted by various international organizations. Some of the released results can indeed bring fame to the nation in different areas despite the ongoing political instability and persisting street protests. However, some rankings have tarnished the national image and have warned the responsible authorities to fix the problem to put the country back on track.

  In the beginning of June, the Political and Economic Risk Consultancy Co. Ltd (PERC) ranked Thailand third place in regards to efficiency of the public sector system in Asia, after Singapore and Hong Kong. Then, at the beginning of November, Thailand was ranked second for the world’s best value destination by the Lonely Planet in its ‘Best In Travel 2010’ guide as one of the cheapest long haul holidays for European tourists. At the end of November, Thailand won top honors in the November issue of Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2009 in several categories including the Top 100 list of hotels. (More …)

  Following the plan by public and private agencies to enlarge Phuket International Airport, Thailand’s second largest airport after Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi, for passenger comfort and improved facilities, the airline business is showing every sign of going well, especially when a number of air carriers are moving forward with their proactive marketing strategies for the upcoming tourism season of the Andaman coastline.

  Thai AirAsia, the Thai subsidiary of Malaysia-based low-cost carrier AirAsia, has designated Phuket as its second hub linking the new routes flying from and to the province, while it has launched additional charter flights servicing Phuket-Hong Kong, Phuket-Singapore, and Phuket-Indonesia’s Medan routes.   Finance Asia readers have voted Bangkok’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel and Singapore Airlines as the best in their sectors in an annual Asian business travel survey.

  The online survey was conducted on 462 Hong Kong-based readers, with the result published in the November issue. The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, Thailand, was voted the region’s top hotel for the second year in a row. The second best went to the Four Seasons in Hong Kong and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in the same city. For the airline sector, Singapore Airlines, which regularly wins people’s choice awards won the best business and first class service. But for long-haul flights to New York and London, Cathay Pacific emerged as the readers’ favorite. (More …)

  Thailand ranked 84th in worldwide corruption index 

  Thailand ranks 10th in Asia and ends with 84th in the world, in this year’s corruption perceptions index released by Transparency Thailand.

  Thailand, El Salvador, Kuatemala, India and Panama scored 3.4 out of 10 points in the ranking. Corruption Perceptions Index measures the perceived level of public- sector corruption in 180 countries. A higher score means less corruption. The ranking was based on surveys from 10 pollsters.   International tourists vote Bangkok as the best city

  International tourists voted Bangkok as the best city to visit out of the ten countries attending The 8th Plenary Meeting of Asian Network of Major Cities 21 (ANMC21).

  Bangkok scored 7.19 out of 10, according to the polls conducted by Bangkok University Research Center. Japan ranked second at 3.12 followed by Singapore at 2.45, Hanoi at 1.65 and Delhi at 1.49. The delicate Thai cuisine was cited as a major attraction at 20.4 percent, followed by cultural sites at 19.7 percent, Thai hospitality at 16.8 percent, Thai culture and tradition at 15.8 percent and Thai shopping venues at 15.1 percent.   Hat Yai to host the Hat Yai Party Festival this Halloween 

  

  Hat Yai city in Songkhla targets tourists from Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore to join Hat Yai Party Festival on October 31, the Halloween Night.

  The southern island province of Phuket is ready for the annual grand “Phuket Vegetarian Festival” scheduled from 18 to 26 October 2009. The event this year has an emphasis on local cultures of Phuket people.

  Phuket Governor Wichai Praisa-ngob said the renowned vegetarian festival had been held in the province annually for more than 100 years. He said the event this year would be grander than last year and it would focus on local cultures exhibited through food, dresses, and festival decorations. (More …)

  Teams compete for prizes in the 21st annual swan boat races at the Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Craft Centre, 19 to 20 September.

  Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Centre, Ayutthaya province, is worth visiting any time of the year, but it has a special fascination for visitors in September, when the riverside complex hosts the annual international swan boat races.

  Now in its 21st year, the dates were changed this year to 19 to 20 September moving back a week from its usual mid-month slot. But it still promises to be a tough, contested, series of races with nine international teams, mainly from around Asia, vying for the annual trophy. (More …)

    This year the tourism industry of Thailand has been hurt by all sorts of bad publicity, causing tourists to lose confidence in traveling safely to Thailand. To counteract this false perception of Thailand, the TAT has launched “The Ultimate Thailand Explorers” event to create positive awareness of Thailand and inspiration for worldwide tourists to travel here, particularly through the use of the internet and web blogs, which influence tourists the most.

    The Tourism Authority of Thailand therefore invites all interested parties to attend a press conference for “The Ultimate Thailand Explorers” project launch on Monday, September 14 from 14:00 to 16:00 in Lotus Suite 5-7, Centara Grand at Central World. This event is an exciting integrated online travel competition that will promote various Thailand destinations through various social and travel related websites.
