  The Ayutthaya World Heritage and Red Cross Fair 2009 will be held from 11-20 December 2009 at the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park to celebrate its prestigious title as a World Cultural Heritage Site.

  Highlights of the event are agricultural exhibitions, a food fair, a Thai-style country song singing contest, floating market activities, cultural performances and a beauty pageant. Booths selling locally-made OTOP products and well known goods from 16 districts can be enjoyed as well as.

  Ayutthaya was declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991. (More …)

  The World Heritage Committee expressed concerns for Ayutthaya, a Thai registered world heritage site, which could be removed from the UNESCO list.

  The Deputy Permanent Secretary for Culture and a World Heritage Committee member, Ms Somsuda Leeyawanit said the deterioration and heavy encroachment in the area of Ayutthaya World Heritage site were against the criteria of UNESCO and might cause Ayutthaya to be removed from the World Heritage list.   Uthai Thani Province is organizing the Huai Kha Khaeng World Heritage Day in December.

  Mr Chonchuen Bunyanusat, the Governor of Uthai Thani Province stated that following the proclamation by UNESCO listing Thung Yai – Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary as the world heritage site, the Cabinet had designated 9 December each year as the Thung Yai – Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary Day. This year, the event would be held during 7-9 December 2009 at the open space on Uthai Thani – Banrai Road and the central park of Banrai District Office, Uthai Thani province. (More …)

  Mongolia and Pakistan agrees to vote for Thailand as a member of the World Heritage Committee in the upcoming election on 23 October at the 35th session of the UNESCO General Conference in Paris.

  Minister of Education, Jurin Laksanawisit reveals after discussing with his Pakistani counterpart, Mr. Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani, and the Mongolian Minister of education, Mr. Yondon Otgonbayar, during the UNESCO Annual General Conference in Paris that Pakistan was interested in the success of Thailand’s education policy as 90% of Thai citizens were literate compared to the 50% literacy in Pakistan.   On the road to Thung Yai and Huay Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary 

  

  After doing a bit of research, I found out that there were, amazingly, UNESCO Wildlife sanctuaries in Uthai Thani province. These wildlife sanctuaries were declared UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites on 13 December 1991. They cover an area of about 2.780 square kilometers and are part of a large area of national parks and wildlife reserves. I decided that I just had to go!

  A little bit about the sanctuaries first though, nearly every kind of virgin forest and jungle found in Thailand is present in these sanctuaries, which are home to a large variety of species, some of which are very rare and endangered: last species of “mahingsa” big buffaloes, are unique to these parks. With only 50 remaining, this means they are the last herd of buffaloes. Special species of tigers and one in particular can also be found; in fact, the sanctuaries rank number 2 in the world for its population, only 13 are left. (More …)

  UNESCO recognition sought for historic Wat Pho inscriptions 

  

  Wat Pho (Thai: วัดโพธิ์) or Wat Phra Chetuphon (Thai: วัดพระเชตุพน)

  Thailand will propose that the historic inscriptions and hermit statues teaching traditional Thai yoga at Wat Pra Chetupon Wimolmangalaram be included in the UNESCO Memory of the World (MOW) Programme in 2009.

  At a meeting on Monday at the Bangkok temple, Prof. Maenmas Chavalit, chairperson of Thailand’s National Committee on the MOW Programme, said the knowledge inscribed on the walls and embodied in the ancient yoga postures at Wat Chetupon — more commonly known as Wat Pho — had universal value.   The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) of Thailand awards ‘Sam Chuk Market’ of Suphan Buri province in central Thailand a prize for cultural heritage place.

  The UNESCO has announced the competition result of the cultural heritage conservation project 2009 covering Asia and Pacific region. There were 48 places from 14 countries in the region in the competition such as hotels, office buildings, cultural places, academic institutes, religious places, public places, residence buildings and cities.
